Six Sustainability Lessons From Novata’s Resilience Roundtable

Novata recently hosted a series of Resilience Roundtables in London, an engaging forum that gathered sustainability professionals to build connections and have meaningful conversations on the state of sustainability today.

The first day’s discussions revolved heavily around navigating shifting sustainability headwinds, and how company leaders can remain steadfast in their advocacy efforts. The session touched on decarbonization challenges and shared insights on remaining resilient for the future. Check out a summary of the key takeaways below:

  1. Making the business case for sustainability against the backdrop of recent events can be a challenging endeavor for many organizations. Positioning it through a risk management lens could be a helpful change in perspective, enabling companies to determine what is material to them at that point in time (such as meeting regulatory compliance or increasing operational efficiency) and how sustainability initiatives best fit the business. Risk mitigation strategies also look at quantifiable metrics or impact, further empowering organizations with the data they need to prove that sustainability results in tangible, meaningful business outcomes.
  2. Change is the only constant in sustainability, and sustainability leaders need to be agile and adaptable to effectively respond to these shifts. Although sustainability has historically been a long game, there’s an urgency to demonstrate quick wins and show how a sustainable focus still has a seat at the table. Proactive stakeholder management, strategic foresight, and a capacity to change will enable companies to be resilient and pivot confidently amidst times of uncertainty.
  3. Sustainability efforts are often under the purview of a designated sustainability team. The speakers called for sustainability champions at a departmental level, as each department would know its function best and understand how sustainability can drive value for its initiatives. This level of ownership ensures that sustainability initiatives are relevant to operational needs and opportunities while bridging the gap between high-level strategies and on-ground implementation.
  4. The language of decarbonization is evolving, moving toward financial incentives and energy security instead of a climate imperative. This is due to the United Kingdom’s active acceleration of grid decarbonization to reduce dependency on volatile energy sources, as well as through mechanisms like the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which is creating direct commercial incentives for low-carbon goods.
  5. Despite increased efforts to advance decarbonization goals, challenges with accurate emissions reporting persist. The use of varying conversion factors, scope definitions, and carbon measurement approaches by different entities make carbon data inconsistent and difficult to compare. The lack of standardization may also undermine the credibility of an organization’s carbon reporting. Although AI has been raised as a potential solution due to its ability to fast-track the pace and scale of decarbonization, organizations should remain cautious of the environmental impacts of its widespread use.
  6. It’s time to shift sustainability’s rhetoric from being “the right thing to do” to how it’s “right for the business.” Complex terminology and leading with a strong sustainability message can be intimidating and push organizations away from adoption. Instead, reframe conversations to communicate how sustainability can be commercially valuable to an organization and tailor it to specific business priorities to make it more appealing to investors and stakeholders.

These pertinent insights paint an encouraging picture of sustainability’s upward trajectory and progression, despite a divisive climate. At Novata, we believe that having these conversations is an important, collective effort to forging a sustainable future.
