Definition

This metric tracks the percentage of total energy consumed by the entities owned or controlled by the organization that is from renewable energy, in the last calendar year.

Expanded Definition

The percentage shall be calculated as renewable energy consumption divided by total energy consumption.

The GRI notes that this energy “can be self-generated or purchased from external sources and it can come from renewable sources (such as wind, hydro or solar).”Renewable energy also includes geothermal, sustainably sourced biomass (including biogas), and wind energy sources.
