This metric tracks the number of work-related fatalities experienced by workers, as measured within the last calendar year.

Expanded Definition

For the purpose of this measurement, the GRI identifies that workers include:

“All workers who are employees (i.e., those workers who are in an employment relationship with the organization according to national law or its application)”; and

“All workers who are not employees but whose work and/or workplace is controlled by the organization.”

The ESG Data Convergence Project explains that “[f]atality records should come from national systems as part of primary data source (e.g., labor inspection records and annual reports; insurance and compensation records, death registers), supplemented by surveys.”

The ILO specifies that “[f]or measurement purposes, a fatal occupational injury is an occupational injury leading to death within one year of the day of the occupational accident.”
